​Dan increased his painting activity after retiring from an academic life. For nearly 30 years he was a Professor in the Environmental Engineering and Science Program at the University of Alberta.  In 2004 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Canada, and in 2013 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, both for his work in Environmental Engineering and Science.

Since 2002 Dan’s painting activities have greatly increased with a number of pieces placed in private collections and four awards for oil paintings. Oil, and ink and watercolor techniques are his main painting mediums.
